According to Cambridge Dictionary, “Skill is an ability to do an activity or job well, especially because you have practiced it”. Skills are synonymous with talents. We’re meant to understand that everyone is born with talents, but only a few discover them. In like manner, some are willing but unable to display their talents, while others are able but unwilling to do the same. That is why “A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort.” ― Sydney Smith. In contrast, some people fail to display their talents, not because they’re unwilling to do so but because they are forbidden or conditioned to remain dormant. Sadly, many talents are not rewarded when it involves a corporate entity, but still, “A really great talent finds its happiness in execution”. ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
There are different skills in life, summed up into soft and hard skills. Although one may have the passion and the will to turn things around, applying the skills or knowledge in that particular area is necessary for such an effort to be effective. This situation leads to redundancy prompting Myles Munroe to say, “The graveyard is the richest place on the surface of the earth because there you will see the books that were not published, ideas that were not harnessed, songs that were not sung, and drama pieces that were never acted”. One needs basic skills in discharging a day-to-day activity, but skill acquisition is vital for specific jobs, so “Doing easily what others find difficult is talent; doing what is impossible with talent is genius”. ― Henri Frederic Amiel. We must encourage talents and skills acquisition in every walk of life and assist in promoting and managing skills. A lot of people who are skilful or talented lack direction and the discernment to steer towards the right part, and that’s why W.H. Auden asserts that “It takes little talent to see clearly what lies under one’s nose, a good deal of it to know in which direction to point that organ.” We must do what is humanly possible to ensure that our natural endowment – talents, including skills acquired through efforts and privileges are utilised otherwise Les Brown submission that, “The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream” remains inevitable.
