“Dissolve your ego before it dissolves yourself.” ―Maxime Lagacé. One of the most cogent reasons ignorance is brutal to liberate is the presence of the Ego. It is not just about Ego but oversized Ego, making most people frown at discourse or humble advice.
A sense of power resonates when we become aware of what other people may not usually consider, but when Ego takes charge when we begin to ‘toot our own horn,’ radical editing of our true self becomes evident, and as such, a price we must pay for grandiosity.
Just like Maxime Lagacé puts it, “Destroy your illusions so you can see reality. Destroy your fears so you can take risks. Destroy your Ego so you can see life.”
It’s not always the ambitious person who falls prey to this Ego, but anyone could be wallowing in such a lifestyle, unaware.
Sometimes, we get too excited to the extent that we are swept away by our thoughts, imaginations, passions, and talents, thereby being unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality.
“A proud man,” says C. S. Lewis, “is always looking down on things and people, and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
The Ego is like a wall that demarcates us from our true selves and thwarts our ability to learn, yet we choose to pick up such a mantle on purpose. Undeniably, we are free to make choices, but our choices will likely determine the subsequent event; otherwise, ‘ fly in the ointment. Therefore, “having the sense of ‘free will’ shouldn’t make us behave instinctively, thereby losing the sense of deliberation and reflection” because even “a puppy is dangerous when it runs wild.”
When one’s Ego is deemed colossal or when one’s Ego is being massaged, the ability to reason and the propensity to see the bigger picture becomes zero. Our Ego constantly presents us with the fear of intimidation and humiliation. Little wonder, “Our wretched species is so made that those who walk on the well-trodden path always throw stones at those who are showing a new road.” ― Voltaire, Philosophical Dictionary.
